Welcome

Thornton Reservoir is a peaceful and picturesque haven for walkers, wildlife enthusiasts and families alike. It provides a varied day out for all. It combines great watery views to look at the birds but also woodland views and walks. The site is dog friendly but are asked to keep them on a lead due to the wildlife. There is plenty of space for you to bring a picnic but due to the nature of the site, BBQs are not allowed.

Travel by public transport

You can get to Thornton Reservoir by bus.
You can get to Thornton by bus. The Arriva 26 bus stops near Thornton. The nearest bus stop is Steam Trumpet on Main Street which is 320 yards away approximately a 7 minute walk. The bus stop is 0.2 miles / 0.3 km from Thornton Reservoir.

Travel by taxi

You can get a taxi with Swift Fox Cabs by calling +44 116 262 8222. The taxi company has a wheelchair accessible vehicle.
You can get a taxi with Hansom Taxis by calling +44 116 233 3333. The taxi company has a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Parking

We have a car park. There are accessible parking spaces. Parking is free.
There is no designated drop-off point. A drop-off in the car park could be possible. There are 5 designated Blue badge holder spaces. From the car park to the entrance, there is level access. The path is sloped.

The door is 760mm wide.
The main door is side hung and manual.

We have high colour contrast between walls and doorframes.

Public toilet

Main Toilets

There is a public toilet for disabled visitors.
From the main entrance to the public toilet, there is level access. The route is 990mm wide, or more.
The toilet door is 800mm wide.
The direction of transfer onto the toilet is to the left.
There is 830mm at the side of the toilet. There is 1180mm in front of the toilet. The toilet seat is 440mm high. The toilets have handrails.

There is one disabled toilet complete with Pull cord alarm.

There are handrails on both sides, the left one is fixed and the right one is moveable.

The sink is motion sensitive and approcimately 720mm off the floor.

The hand dryer is hot air and is fairly loud and is approximately 840mm off the floor.

Shop

Fishing Lodge

From the main entrance to the shop, there is level access. The route is 990mm wide, or more. The door is 760mm wide.
The route through the shop is 800mm wide, or more.

There is no inside seating area.

Refreshments available include hot and cold drinks and snacks such as crisps and cakes. Please note this is closed November-January.

The cafe entrance is via a door which opens inwards and is 760mm.

There are a few seats outside the cafe which are moveable, however, there are no tables available.

The till counter is 880mm high.

Staff will assist visitor if they require it.

Getting around outside

Designated Walking Trail

Circular Track

The trail is 4024metres long. The trail has a hard surface. Some of the trail has a loose surface. There is a kissing gate at the start of the trail which is 1100mm wide. It opens, you go in close it to the other side and then exit. There is a kissing gate at the end of the walk which is 1040mm wide and operates the same as the starting gate. The trail is sloped. The trail has seats.

The path carries on from the fishing lodge going clockwise around the reservoir.

There are views of the reservoir along the walk.

There are sections where you go through areas of woodland and over bridges.

Aspects of the walk can get muddy at times.

The walk has variable gradient.

Picnic Area

From the car park to the picnic area, there is level access. The path is 990mm wide, or more.
The entrance is 1000mm wide.
You can bring your own food to the picnic area.

The picnic area is at the end of the walk.

The area is grassy and can get muddy.
