Welcome

Discover how the boy born in this house became one of the driving forces behind the modern conservation movement.  The exterior has been restored to its original condition.  Inside, you'll find a warm welcome with friendly, well informed staff always available to answer questions.  Our absorbing hands on interpretation centre will take you on the journey of John Muir's life as a pioneering conservationist, explorer, writer, geologist and inventor.

The fire alarm has flashing lights.
We have a hearing loop in In video booth on first floor.
All staff have disability awareness training. Some staff have Next Generation Text training.

We have emergency evacuation procedures for disabled visitors.

Travel by public transport

You can get to John Muir's Birthplace by bus and train.
John Muir's Birthplace is located on Dunbar's High Street, with buses stops both north and southbound within a few minutes' walk. The bus stop is 0.3 miles / 0.5 km from John Muir's Birthplace.
The nearest train station is Dunbar. The train station is 0.5 miles / 0.8 km from John Muir's Birthplace.

Travel by taxi

You can get a taxi with Torrence Taxis by calling 01368 862612. The taxi company has a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Parking

John Muir's Birthplace is located on Dunbar High Street which has free parking bays (including disabled parking). Waiting time is limited to 90 minutes.

There is a free non-time-limited car park 5 minutes walk away at Dunbar Swimming Pool.

We have contrast markings on all glass doors and high colour contrast between walls and doorframes.

You can get a lift to all floors.

Ticket/ information desk

From the main entrance to the desk, there is level access.

The Museum Assistant will come from behind the desk to deal with most visitors, including wheelchair users.

We have performances with: relaxed and touch tour.
We have a designated quiet space.

Ground Floor

From the main entrance to this area, there is level access. The route is 910mm wide, or more. Some display information is low, for wheelchair users. There are seats.

No Concession rates as entrance is free.

Public Toilet

From the main entrance to the public toilet, there is level access. The route is 910mm wide, or more.
The toilet door is 870mm wide.
The direction of transfer onto the toilet is to the left.
There is 580mm at the side of the toilet. There is 1300mm in front of the toilet. The toilet seat is 495mm high. The toilets have handrails.

There is one accessible toilet for all visitors.
