Accessibility Guide for The Granary - Little Comfort Farm

Travel by public transport

You can get to The Granary - Little Comfort Farm by train.

The nearest train station is Barnstaple. The train station is 7 miles / 11.3 km from The Granary - Little Comfort Farm.

From junction 27 of the M5 take the North Devon Link Road (A361) to Barnstaple.

At round about just before Barnstaple take signs for the A361 to Ilfracombe.

Pass through Braunton still on the A361 (towards Ilfracombe).

Pass through the village of Knowle still on the A361.

2/3 mile after Knowle turn right towards Halsinger at Heddon Mills Cross, by bus stop. Please take great care at this junction as it is an accident black spot.

Proceed 1.8 miles turning left at the second crossroads.

Then left again after a very short distance.

Continue for 1 mile down a winding lane, over a small bridge and take the second entrance (signposted Main Entrance) for Woodlark & Caen Byre or the third gateway (signposted Entrance 2) for Mill House and the Granary.

Travel by taxi

You can get a taxi with Go 2 Taxi by calling 01271 545007. You can get a taxi with Driving Miss Daisy by calling 03330146221. The taxi company has a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Parking

We have a car park. There are accessible parking spaces. The parking is less than 50 metres from the main entrance. Parking is free.

There is a drop-off point at the main entrance. The drop-off point has a dropped kerb.

From the car park to the entrance, there is level access. The route is 1350mm wide, or more.

Unfortunately, due to COVID risk we cannot help visitors with their luggage at this time. 

We have high colour contrast between walls and doorframes.

Bedrooms

All bedrooms have windows.

Bedrooms have ceiling lights, bedside lamps and natural daylight.

Lights are LED and energy saving. TVs have subtitles.

All bedrooms are non-smoking.

We have non-allergic bedding.

No bedrooms have fitted carpets.

We have wi-fi free bedrooms, for visitors with electro-sensitivity.

All cleaning products are eco-friendly and are formulated with significantly less chemicals than regular cleaning products. As such they are less likely to be the cause of an allergic reaction., The beds are made by Demko and are a 100% natural and organic. , The bedlinen is made from organic cotton by Greenfibres., Natural paints are used throughout by Earthborn, Sustainable building materials are used throughout including wood fibre insulation and clay based plaster and render (non gypsum). , The architectural design reduces electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs). This comprised attention to spatial layouts, radial wiring and use of shielded cables within 1m of all bedrooms. Electromagnetic radiation isolation switches are in all bedrooms. , The floors are oak and the kitchens are made with solid reclaimed pine with slate worktops. , No/minimal plastic has been used in construction and furnishings. All furniture is solid wood either FSC certified or upcycled., Our water is from a well on the farm and created in our water plant room with UV light. The water does not contain chlorine or fluoride and is fed to the cottage through non-PVC pipework. and The farm has been certified organic by the Soil Association.

We can move the bedroom furniture, to improve accessibility.

Accessible bedroom Twin Room

The route to the bedroom is 850mm wide, or more. The bedroom door is 780mm wide. There is 620mm at the side of the bed. The bed is 530mm high. There is 230mm under the bed.

There is a low clothes rail. You can use the rail sitting down.

There is an emergency call system next to the bed.

The bedroom is twin. The bathroom is separate. It is not an ensuite.

The bathroom door is 810mm wide.

The bathroom has a separate shower. The shower has a seat. The shower has a handrail.

The bathroom has a bath.

The bath has a handrail.

The bathroom has a level access shower. There is a shower chair available. The level access shower has handrails.

The toilets have handrails. The direction of transfer onto the toilet is to the right. There is 600mm at the side of the toilet.

There is 1230mm in front of the toilet. The toilet seat is 500mm high.

The basin is 730mm high. The taps are lever operated. There is space under the basin, with no pedestal or boxing.

The walls and the bathroom fittings have high colour contrast.

Please note that there is no television in the bedroom. 

The bedroom furniture can be rearranged to suit your particular needs. In its current set up, L-shaped with measurements as depicted, there is ample space. 

An alarm can be provided on request for the bedroom. 

The shower seat can be fitted on request to the shower.

Please note that there is no television in the bedroom. 

The way the bedroom is set up at the moment means that there is 50cm between the foot of the bed and the wall. This could be increased slightly but the bed would have to be placed against the wall and access to the rightside of the bed would be restricted in this case. 

There is a cosy patio accessible from this bedroom via a slight step or via the front of the building down a slight slope. 

An alarm can be provided on request for the bedroom. 

The shower seat can be fitted on request to the shower.

Self catering kitchen

The Granary Kitchen

We have an open plan kitchen.

From the main entrance to the kitchen, there is level access.

The route is 800mm wide, or more.

The kitchen is open plan and spacious. 

The worktops, the cooker and the sink are at a height of 91cm. 

Lounge

The Granary Lounge

From the main entrance to the lounge, there is level access. The route is 800mm wide, or more.

The lounge is spacious, bright and airy with comfortable seating. 

From the main entrance to the gardens, there is level access.

There is a permanent ramp.

The route is sloped. The route is 850mm wide, or more.

From the main entrance to the gardens, there are 15 steps. There is no lift and no ramp.

Little Comfort Farm is a working farm nestled in a little valley and as such there are some steep sloping areas, some of which are gravelled, which can be muddy and slippery after a rainfall. The grounds and gardens, including the fishing lake, are for the use and enjoyment of all our guests. Paths are signposted for guests to explore on their own or they can join a guided nature discovery package. There is also a little bridge over the Caen river which runs through the bottom of the valley and the middle of the farm. 

Guests from the Granary do have level access to the orchard and some of the fields beyond. 

Terrace

The Granary Terrace

From the main entrance to this area, there is level access. The route is 1500mm wide, or more.

The entrance is 5000mm wide.

To get to a table, there are no steps.

The terrace is enclosed and has both paving slabs where the table is, and gravel on both sides of the path. This is the perfect space for al fresco dining or perhaps an evening BBQ.

King Bedroom Terrace

From the main entrance to the area, there are 2 steps.

This is a beautiful private spot which can be accessed via the king bedroom (no steps but there is a pinch point in the room which means wheelchairs cannot pass through the bedroom to the french doors). It can also be accessed via the back door or externally. It has a table and chairs and is perfect for that first coffee of the morning.

Dogs can be walked anywhere within the grounds of Little Comfort Farm. If it is not possible for the dog faeces to be collected due to a disability, there are fields near to the Granary where faeces does not need to be collected. Dog owners are reminded that as Little Comfort Farm is a working farm with livestock, all dogs must be up to date with their worming as dog worms can kill livestock.

We have an area to charge mobility scooters and battery powered wheelchairs.

Batttery packs can be plugged into sockets within the cottage at your own convenience. Alternatively outdoor areas with space for mobility scooters or wheelchairs to be parked adjacent to charging points could be made available - please ring us to discuss your specific requirements.

Emergency evacuation procedures

We have emergency evacuation procedures for disabled visitors.

The evacuation procedure is described within in our fire risk assessment and is available within the cottage. If you do have specific requirements please do contact us to discuss.

Some staff have disability awareness training.

We have information in large print.

Staff are available 24 hours a day.

Large print visitor information can be provided on request. Please request this in advance of your stay.

The proprietors live in the Farm House. We ask guests to only contact staff for day to day issues during normal working hours, but in emergencies the proprieters are usually available 24 hours.
