Welcome

Danby Lodge is our historic visitor centre, set in an idyllic spot on the banks of the River Esk, near Danby. From the doorstep, you can see pretty much everything that makes the North York Moors National Park so special: moorland, woodland, farmland, miles of hedges and drystone walls, historic buildings – all basking in glorious peace and quiet.

Travel by public transport

You can get to Danby Lodge National Park Centre by bus and train.
The Moors Bus has a stop off directly outside the Centre from Easter until September the timetable can be found at https://www.moorsbus.org/timetablesfares.html The bus stop is 0 miles / 0.0 km from Danby Lodge National Park Centre.
The nearest train station is Danby station, Danby, Danby, North Yorkshire, YO21 2JL. The train station is 0.9 miles / 1.4 km from Danby Lodge National Park Centre.

Danby is a railway station on the Esk Valley Line, which runs between Middlesbrough and Whitby via Nunthorpe. The station, situated 15 miles 9 chains west of Whitby, serves the villages of Ainthorpe and Danby, Scarborough in North Yorkshire, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains

Travel by taxi

You can get a taxi with White Rose Taxis by calling +44 (0) 1947 604604. You can get a taxi with Abbey Taxis by calling 01947 606666 or 01947 601212. The taxi company has a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

We have a car park. There are accessible parking spaces. Parking is not free.
There is a drop-off point at the main entrance. The drop-off point does not have a dropped kerb.

The main door is side hung and manual.
The main door is sliding and automatic.

One entrance to the National Park Centre, approximately 86cm and 87cm wide. Level access except for slight step at front door. The entrance to the building has double doors that are hooked back when we are open which and  a sliding automatic door

You can get a lift to all floors.

The lift is a platform lift.
The lift door is 900mm wide.
The lift is 1200mm wide. The lift is 1400mm deep.
The lift buttons have raised numbers or letters.
The lift shows the floor number, at each floor.

Public toilet

Inside toilet for disabled people

There is a public toilet for disabled visitors.
From the main entrance to the public toilet, there is level access. There is a permanent ramp.
The route is 820mm wide, or more.
The toilet door is 820mm wide.
The direction of transfer onto the toilet is to the right.
There is 1000mm at the side of the toilet. There is 1200mm in front of the toilet. The toilet seat is 470mm high. The toilets have handrails.

You need a RADAR key to open the public toilet.

There is 750mm at the side of the toilet. There is 700mm in front of the toilet. The toilet seat is 470mm high. The toilets have handrails.

Place to eat and drink

Park Life Cafe

From the main entrance to the dining area, there is level access. The route is 900mm wide, or more. The door is 800mm wide.
To get to a table, there are no steps.
The route through the dining area is 800mm wide, or more.
There is background music sometimes.
The table and plates have high colour contrast.
We cater for sugar free (diabetic), vegetarian, gluten free (celiacs), lactose free (dairy free), nut free, low fat, low sodium and vegan specific diets.

The Climbing Wall is up two steps from the landing on the on the first floor. There is a lift from the ground floor to the first floor

Interactive exhibition on the ground floor

From the main entrance to this area, there is level access. The route is 800mm wide, or more.

There is a slight ramp between two of the exhibition rooms

Getting around outside

Main lawn and grounds

From the car park to the picnic area, there is level access. The path is 1200mm wide, or more.
The entrance is 1200mm wide.
Some tables have space for wheelchair users. You can bring your own food to the picnic area.

Terrace

Terrace Garden

From the main entrance to this area, there is level access. The route is 800mm wide, or more.
The entrance is 800mm wide.

The Terrace Garden is on level access however the Terrace can only be accessed by steep uneven stone steps

Danby Loop - Walk Around the Grounds

From the main entrance to this area, there is level access. There is a permanent ramp. The route is 1200mm wide, or more.

The grounds are a mixture of solid paths, grass areas and a wooden board walks. The grounds a mostly flat and accessable but following wet weather some areas of grass maybe more difficult to get across.

Play area

From the main entrance to this area, there is level access. The route is 1200mm wide, or more. The entrance is 1200mm wide.

The play area is accross the main lawn and is on a woodchip flooring.

Crow Wood

From the main entrance to this area, there is level access. The route is 1000mm wide, or more.

There is a gate in the car park into Crow Wood where there is a short circular, easy access route around the wood
