Welcome

Heather & Richard welcome you to this unique location beside the North York Moors close to Dalby Forest, Scarborough and the coast.  Amber Cottage is suitable for people with limited mobility and part time wheelchair users.  It has wide doorways, level floors, a huge ground floor bedroom and a walk in wet room with a shower that will make your day.  All cottages have Wi Fi, period features, comfortable sofas and beds and well equipped kitchens. Jade & Topaz are dog friendly.  Opal Cottage kitchen is in a garden room with deck over the wildlife pond.  A great place to escape from the city and listen to the birds.

Level access

The main entrance has level access. The ramp is permanent.

Bedrooms

We have non-allergic bedding.

Level access bedrooms

The route to the bedroom is 750mm wide, or more.
The bedroom door is 750mm wide, or more.
There is unobstructed floor space 1200mm by 900mm, or more.
The bathroom has a level access shower.

Hearing

The (bedroom) TVs have subtitles.
All staff have disability awareness training. Some staff have Next Generation Text training.

General

The accommodation is rated by the National Accessible Scheme as suitable for:

Travel by public transport

You can get to Amber Cottage, Basin Howe Farm by train.
The nearest train station is Scarborough. The train station is 14 miles / 22.5 km from Amber Cottage, Basin Howe Farm.

Basin Howe Farm is not served by public buses.

Travel by taxi

You can get a taxi with Station Taxis by calling 01723 366366. The taxi company has a wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Guests planning a holiday at Basin Howe Farm do need a car as we are off the beaten track.  

Parking

We have a car park. The parking is less than 50 metres from the main entrance. Parking is free.
There is a drop-off point at the main entrance. The drop-off point has a dropped kerb.
From the car park to the entrance, there is level access. There is a permanent ramp.
The path is sloped.
The route is 1300mm wide, or more.

Each cottage has an entrance, there is no main entrance.

There is a permanent ramp.
When you arrive, we can help carry your luggage.

The path from the car park to Amber Cottage is a gentle slope.  We do not have a main entrance.  Each cottage has its own door.

Bedrooms

All bedrooms have windows.
Bedrooms have ceiling lights, bedside lamps and natural daylight.
Lights are halogen and energy saving. TVs have subtitles.
All bedrooms are non-smoking.
We have non-allergic bedding.
All bedrooms have fitted carpets.
There are no feather pillows or quilts in Amber Cottage, no dogs are allowed and we do not have any cats. and Guests needing oxygen can arrange their supplies in advance.
We can move the bedroom furniture, to improve accessibility.

Accessible bedrooms

The route to the bedroom is 1300mm wide, or more. The bedroom door is 800mm wide. There is 1400mm at the side of the bed. The bed is 630mm high. There is a low clothes rail. You can use the rail sitting down.
The bedroom is flexible (either double or twin). The bedroom has an interconnecting room. The bathroom is ensuite. The bathroom door is 800mm wide.
The bathroom has a separate shower. The shower has a seat. The shower has a handrail.
The bathroom has a level access shower. There is a shower chair available. The level access shower has handrails.
The toilets have handrails. The direction of transfer onto the toilet is to the right. There is 940mm at the side of the toilet.
There is 1150mm in front of the toilet. The toilet seat is 420mm high.
The basin is 900mm high. The taps are lever operated. There is space under the basin, with no pedestal.

The wet room can be accessed either from the lounge or from the bedroom.  There is a video further on in this guide.

Laundry for all guests

We have an iron and ironing board. You can use the ironing board sitting down.

The laundry room is not accessible for wheelchairs but can be accessed by people with limited mobility.

Self catering kitchen

Amber Cottage Kitchen

From the main entrance to the kitchen, there is level access.
The route is 1450mm wide, or more.
The door is 1450mm wide.
The table and plates have high colour contrast.

The kitchen is very well equipped, there is wheelchair access into the kitchen, worktops are a standard height 920mm.

The route is 1450mm wide, or more.

Lounge

From the main entrance to the lounge, there is level access. The door is 1450mm wide.

Access into Amber Lounge is via double width patio doors with a low threshold

Amber Lounge has comfy sofas and a rise & recline chair Dining table in the lounge has a lovely outlook.  It is easy for guests in wheelchairs to dine at this table. Feature stone wall, stairs to mezzanine and archway to kitchen.

Getting around outside

Gardens at Basin Howe Farm Cottages

From the main entrance to the gardens, there is level access.

There are three acres of award winning gardens at Basin Howe Farm.  Most are accessed by level gravel paths or grass areas.  There are no slopes or steps.  Those with limited mobility can access most areas.  Access for wheelchair users is difficult without a helper.

Patio and seating

From the main entrance to this area, there is level access. The entrance is 1300mm wide.

Double width patio doors open on to the patio.  One of the seats has been removed from the bench so that wheelchairs can access the table.  A sturdy chair is provided for guests with limited mobility.

Somewhere to relax during your holiday at Basin Howe Farm Flower baskets and a flower bed brighten up your patio. Great place for spotting butterflies and bees. Getting out and about along our quiet country lanes.

Raised toilet seat.  Rise & recline chair.

Dogs are not accepted in Amber Cottage but one dog is welcome in either Jade or Topaz Cottage.
We have an area to charge mobility scooters and battery powered wheelchairs.
You can hire mobility equipment from Active Mobility Centre by calling 01723 355122.
You can hire mobility equipment from Scarborough Mobility (scooters or wheelchairs for the town centre) by calling 01723 377515.

Emergency evacuation procedures

Each cottage has hardwired fire alarms and each has easy access to the outside.  

Customer care support

All staff have disability awareness training.
Some staff have Next Generation Text training.

We are very willing to help if called upon to do so but cannot guarantee that we will be at home.
